Turner Celebrates Groundbreaking of the Innovative Genomics Institute – Bakar Labs Building in Berkeley, California
Turner Construction Company joined the University of California, Berkeley, the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), Bakar Labs, project partners, researchers, and community leaders to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Innovative Genomics Institute – Bakar Labs building, marking a major milestone for one of the most transformative life sciences developments in the Bay Area.
The groundbreaking represents the culmination of years of vision, planning, and collaboration among UC Berkeley, the Innovative Genomics Institute, Bakar Labs, philanthropic supporters, architects Weiss/Manfredi and DGA, engineers, consultants, and construction partners working toward a shared goal: creating a world-class hub where scientific discovery, entrepreneurship, and innovation can thrive together. The project will become a cornerstone of Berkeley’s Innovation Zone and further strengthen the city’s position as a global leader in biotechnology and climate-focused research.
When complete, the new facility will provide state-of-the-art laboratory, research, and collaboration spaces that support both the Innovative Genomics Institute’s pioneering genomics research and Bakar Labs’ growing ecosystem of emerging biotechnology companies. The building will expand capacity for CRISPR-based research and provide critical infrastructure for life science startups transitioning from early-stage incubation to growth, helping innovative companies remain in Berkeley and continue contributing to the region’s economy and innovation ecosystem.
In addition, Turner has also been selected to lead construction of the Bon Secours Wellness Arena Master Plan in Greenville.
Turner was selected by the Greenville Arena District as construction manager for the Bon Secours Wellness Arena Master Plan, a multi-phase project that will modernize the existing arena, add a new 6,500-seat outdoor amphitheater, and expand the surrounding entertainment district in the heart of downtown Greenville. As construction manager, Turner will be responsible for overseeing all phases of construction, with a priority to maximize the participation of local contractors, subcontractors, and workforce.
