The University of Duisburg-Essen has awarded HOCHTIEF the contract to build a new research center on the campus in Essen. HOCHTIEF will also convert and extend a former boiler house in Krefeld into a modern event center. The new research center in Essen is a five-story building for interdisciplinary work in the fields of nano- and material sciences, energy, water, microbiome, protein, environmental and chemical research. At the heart of the building is a 4,100-square-meter state-of-the-art laboratory area. The building will be equipped with a large-scale photovoltaic system. The sustainable infrastructure also includes e-mobility facilities as well as bicycle parking spaces. Construction work will begin in late summer 2025 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2028. In addition, HOCHTIEF will convert the former boiler house on the Mies van der Rohe campus in Krefeld into a center with state-of-the-art technology for concerts and special events. As part of the contract award, HOCHTIEF is responsible for the entire planning services across all project phases and will be commissioned in stages.
