HOCHTIEF has been awarded a contract to build a collection research center for the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, Germany’s largest natural history museum and home to one of the world’s most significant scientific collections. The contract will generate revenue of approximately EUR 70 million for HOCHTIEF.

The project comprises the construction of a new secondary location for the Natural History Museum in Berlin-Adlershof, including a three-story collection research center with a storage facility. The building will provide storage space for around half of the museum’s collection of 30 million objects, along with specialized laboratories, digitalization and work areas, as well as quarantine and decontamination facilities.

Designed by general planner agn, the Natural History Museum’s second location will feature a resource-efficient design including green facades, a green roof, renewable energy systems and the use of CO₂-reduced construction materials. The project is targeting BNB Silver certification.

The project is another example of HOCHTIEF’s expertise in delivering complex public infrastructure projects that combine demanding technical requirements with long-term sustainability objectives. Drawing on experience from research and laboratory facilities including projects for the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, BASF Schwarzheide and the Berlin-Brandenburg State Laboratory, HOCHTIEF will also benefit from expertise available across the Group in the delivery of research, laboratory and cultural facilities in international markets.

Construction is planned to begin in September 2026, with handover scheduled for summer 2029.
