FlatironDragados, as lead partner of the Mactaquac Improvement Partnership, announced today that the partnership has executed a development phase agreement with New Brunswick Power Corporation (NB Power) for the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project at the 672-megawatt Mactaquac Generating Station in New Brunswick. The partnership includes FlatironDragados, Aecon and Green Infrastructure Partners.

Under an Early Contractor Involvement approach, the Mactaquac Improvement Partnership will work collaboratively with NB Power during a 12-month development phase to advance design, schedule development and cost estimates for key elements of the project. Subject to approvals and following successful completion of the development phase, next step will be a construction contract. Construction is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2027, with completion anticipated in 2039.

The Mactaquac Life Achievement Project is NB Power's long-term rehabilitation program to enable the Mactaquac Generating Station to reach its anticipated life through 2068. The project will address deterioration caused by alkali-aggregate reaction through major civil, mechanical, electrical and environmental improvements while maintaining safe and reliable station operations.

Project work includes:

.

Rehabilitation and strengthening of station structures, including concrete remediation, seepage control, powerhouse upgrades, intake and tailrace rehabilitation, and spillway and sluiceway improvements.

.

Replacement or refurbishment of critical equipment and systems, including mechanical and electrical balance-of-plant systems, turbine and generator embedded parts, cranes, stoplogs and other heavy mechanical components.

.

Environmental and operational enhancements, including fish passage improvements and dam mitigation measures.

Built in 1968, the Mactaquac Generating Station provides 30 percent of the province’s legislated renewable energy requirements and 20 percent of New Brunswick’s peak electrical capacity needs. The rehabilitation program will help ensure the facility continues to provide reliable renewable power for decades to come.

As lead partner, FlatironDragados will draw on its extensive experience delivering complex water, dam, power and heavy civil infrastructure projects across North America. The collaborative delivery approach will enable the project team and NB Power to work closely together to optimize scope, manage risk and enhance schedule and cost certainty before construction begins.
